The Power of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is God. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot be saved. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot know Truth. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot worship God properly in a way that pleases Him. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot say, “Jesus is Lord” and we certainly cannot ‘do evangelism’. Evangelism is something that happens by the power of the Holy Spirit. It does not happen, and will not happen, any other way. We cannot preach the gospel or speak words of testimony of Jesus Christ without the power of the Holy Spirit filling and working in and through us. We cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit, unless we are first converted and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Evangelism will not happen because of our intellect, our education, our man made plans, our programs or our decision that we will do such and such. Only God the Holy Spirit filling us, working through us, will make this possible. Not because we went to ‘how to do church’ conventions, not because of church growth or corporate business-management marketing seminars, not because of the wisdom and power of men. God will not share His glory, or His power. We do not plan our own results or success. This is a spiritual thing. Not a corporate, business management thing.
Jesus said, “I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH.”

The Holy Spirit, as the wind, blows where He wills, drawing men, leading the lost to repentance. We must repent, and humbly pray and ask the Father, in Jesus name, to fill us with the Holy Spirit, that He would do the work, in and through us, according to His will. We should pray for ourselves and each other, that by His power we would boldly, lovingly, joyfully and fearlessly share the gospel. We should pray for the salvation of the lost. Then when the gospel is proclaimed, when the seeds of God’s Word are sown and souls are harvested for the Kingdom, then God will get the glory, not us. We do not need an ‘envisioned future’, or to ‘recast the future’, or measureable goals, or secular organizational success strategies. We need the Power of the Holy Spirit. “We” can’t make this happen. This is somthing GOD does. We can only get on our face and ask Him to fill us with His Spirit.

Do not quench the Spirit. 1 Thes.5:19.

And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. 1 John5:6/7.

We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.2 Cor.4:7.

You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you..Acts1:8.

A few years ago, I found this sermon. It was an enormous help, comfort and encouragement to me. Here are the notes I penciled on a scrap paper as I listened to it online.

Marks of a Spirit Filled Church
by: A.W.Tozer

Signs of a Spirit Filled Church

  • Jesus is glorified and exalted (Christ centered, not man centered)
  • Faith is producing fruit
  • Teaches the bible: nothing is dragged in from outside (such as New Age, Psychology, unregenerate man’s philosophies and methods, false teaching)
  • Fights to remain biblical
  • True to the Word
  • Loyal to Christ first
  • Joy!
  • Useful to community
  • ‘Costly’ discipleship (as opposed to ‘easy’)
  • Not for “fun” or “entertainment”
  • Worship=healing and joy
  • Spirit filled life
  • Spirit filled church
  • Sensitive to the Lord’s presence
  • Burdened to be rid of sins
  • Bad Signs

  • Irreverence
  • Dishonesty
  • Emptiness: no fire burning in your heart to obey God
  • No transforming power of truth: may give knowledge, but no power.

    1. Well, after listening to it again, I realize that the last part (my notes above) is not in that sermon. Not sure where I got that, it was on the same note paper. Where did I hear that? My apologies, I’ll post it if I find it.

    4. I been feeling the spirit of god inside me, but the church I’m going said that god is just touching me and I’m not filled because I don’t speak in toungs. Do you absolutely have to speak in toungs to be filled with the holy ghost?
