Go Get Your Own Oil

Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in flasks along with their lamps. Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all these virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open up for us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour (that the Son of Man comes). Matt.25:1-13.

The foolish virgins are not ready when the bridegroom comes at midnight; they do not have enough oil. So they ask the wise virgins to give them some of their oil. “Go get your own oil” is the response. Hey, that does not sound very ‘nice’ or ‘Christian’. We can love one another, serve each other with the gifts of the Spirit; we can teach each other, exhort one another, and encourage one another. But we cannot give each other our oil. We can’t get oil from someone else. We each must go ourselves to the Source and get our own oil.

Getting oil costs. We have to buy it. Getting the oil takes time. There will be a lot of foolish virgins who are surprised, shocked and unprepared when the bridegroom comes and they have not taken the time, and spent what it costs, to get the oil first. By the time they get around to it, at the last minute, it will be too late. When the shout calls out, “Come out to meet him”, there will not be enough time.

Oh God, make me a wise virgin and fill me with Your love and power; connect me to the Vine and fill me up with the revelation of Your Word, with intimacy with You, and with the Holy Spirit. Make me ready. Give me Your oil!
