gentle, sparrow-like saints, be encouraged in Truth

“This cup is the new covenant in my blood” 1Cor.11:25

Excerpts from an article about “How to Honorably Leave a Church”, by false teacher, predator and wolf Doug Phillips, found via the internet “Wayback Machine”. The article was originally posted on his blog in 2005 and again in 2007.

DP Quote: “Christians are in a state of covenant with the Lord. One way that supreme covenant finds expression is through the “mini” covenant of their relations and duties to Christ’s local church. Because Christians are in covenant with Christ, they are to be in covenant with a local church. They are not “married” to the local church, but they are to be in a state of formal covenant with it. This “mini” covenant (an extension of our covenant with Christ) carries privileges and responsibilities, and is not to be taken lightly.”

Me: This is a re-phrasing of the “Church is the Way to God/ Church is the Savior” deception. This is the same doctrine as stated (by means of similar flowery words) by the catechism of the Roman Catholic Church. And like the RCC, Protestantism (whether the Calvary Chapel flavor, the Willowcreek Association model or the strict Puritan/Reformed Calvinist), teaches lies that, if taken to heart, ie believed, and put into practice, only serve to bring the gentle sparrow-like saint into bondage, confusion, shame, false obligation, pain and spiritual suffering. Oh love of Truth!

DP Quote: “To put it another way, the believer’s covenant with the local church can be transferred to another Christ-honoring local church, but it cannot be “resigned,” abandoned, or simply disregarded without the professing believer becoming a covenant-breaker.”

Me: Lies. Straight from the spirit of bondage. The writer equates covenant with Church as on the same level as covenant with God.

We do not express our covenant with Christ, by demonstrating and making a covenant with an organized religion, institutional Church.

That teaching makes “Church” out to be Christ. There is only ONE covenant with God that is in and through the blood of Jesus Christ alone. Jesus Christ needs no intermediary. He does not need The Church to step in and be the mediator between Him and the saints.  The saint has every right to leave any religion or Church or cult or group or ideology or doctrine or practice, if that thing is usurping upon the covenant the saint has with Christ. Saints all thru history (the great cloud of witnesses) have left all manner of societal, cultural, political and religious obligations in order to enter in to covenant with Christ. (I am not speaking of marriage here, I am speaking of religions, traditions, organizations, political groups, secret groups, occupations, religious teachers and such.) In other words, we cannot have two masters. Our covenant is not with “Christ, AND–“. We cannot have covenants with two entities at the same time….. one a thing and one a Person. Our loyalty and allegiance, which is part of our covenant, is with Christ. He does not share us, our heart’s loyalty, with a… Thing. We absolutely can resign and abandon what causes us to be prevented from having a clear conscience before Christ / having Truth and Life in Christ….. Our covenant is with ONE Master, Lord Jesus Christ. The Church says “To be disloyal to The Church is to be disloyal to God” and “To go against Church is to go against God.” These claims make (visible/ institutional) Church out to be God, or at least the mediator between you and God.

Your covenant with God is with HIM, in the blood of Christ.

Gentle, sparrow-like saints, be encouraged in the Truth.

    • hey Mickey! That title sounds familiar from a long time ago but I have not read it. I just read the first 5star review on amazon and agree completely with the points there. This is the elephant in the room! Another thing…. this was written way back in 2000, since then they have come up with very clever “Third way” strategies to bind/control Christians and Churches while utilizing them for their own (public policy) means.

  1. I chose this title because upon remembering the reference to sparrows in Matthew 10, I thought of how all the malevolent characters (the metaphors for the bad guys) in the chapter are the ones who hurt the sparrow. Perhaps this is why the sparrow falls to the ground, due to being hurt by them. And this does not happen without our Father knowing it. NOT that God is “making” or “letting” it happen (that is not the point) but that our Father is keeping tabs on what the hurtful do to His gentle sparrows; the guilty are not without account to Him.

  2. The church is not a physical place but an assembly of believers (anywhere). When elders of an assembly stray from the word of God and begin to teach that to the congregation, and the sparrow becomes aware of this, he or she has the freedom to fly away from that assembly just as the apostle Paul taught in Romans 16:17. In fact it would be bad for him or her to stay under false teaching because eventually they would be overcome and placed into bondage.

    However,

When an assembly of believers is gathered under the word of God faithfully and someone comes in and talks against that faithful gathering which is following the word of God then the assembly has to discipline in love the one who is against the teaching of the bible – that is the apostles teaching given to them by Christ in the new testament which is founded upon the rock – Christ himself. Those who reject discipline can and should be put outside the fellowship (1 cor 5) because that is the loving thing to do and if they repent they are brought back into the fellowship – (2 corinthians when he who was put out was taken back). To ignore sin within a congregation is one definition of pride because it becomes a party spirit where people do not want to upset others (no matter what) but just forgive them no matter what they are doing…This is could liberal theology today and it is not of the bible. To ignore sin and lawlessness within the body of Christ is prideful. It is tantamount to watching your wife being raped by a stranger why you all the time just watch and then forgive him afterwards – this logic is madness beyond belief.

Every assembly of believers, including the house churches and small groups of people, have the Holy Spirit and the word of God to teach them what is right from wrong and any man or women who strays from the word of God, no matter what there education or ministry, is to be withstood by the assembly. Many individuals today who attend a denomination are subject to brainwashing so that they keep attending that denomination even though they see many things being committed which is against the word of God. Jesus Christ and the Father are word of God (John 1:1), The Holy Spirit is the word of God (John 6:63) – anything which contradicts the God head – Their Word – is against them and every sparrow – through the word of God since “it is written” – has power to leave that which is against them. You are not under bondage to follow people who pick and choose what they want from the bible but then ignore other things. Christ said that I am the truth and the truth will set you free.

That being said – we must tread carefully to make sure that what we do is based upon the word of God and no matter what we do we do it with love – if we leave a congregation it should be with a mournful heart and with much prayer for not only yourself but for the assembly that you leave – with a heart that wants to see your brothers and sisters following the word of God. As David cried for Absolom so must a Christian cry for others…we shouldn’t hate the world today but we should grieve in spirit and pray for their salvation, love them and give what we can to help them to come to know Christ and to pray for the church today to repent and be restored. Yes there are people who profess Christ who will be lost (Read Matthew 7 – Jesus said this) – but until that day comes with all our hearts and souls we should grieve and pray for as many as possible to come under conviction and to repent. Not just the lost world but also those who profess but also deny Christ. Pray for all – Love – but don’t tolerate that which is against the word of God – expose it – for that which exposes darkness is of the light (of Christ) (eph 5) – it is the loving thing to do – even if it means that the congregation throw you out.
I leave you with this – it is better to stand alone with God than with many hands who are against God:

[Isa 66:1-2, 5 KJV] 1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven [is] my throne, and the earth [is] my footstool: where [is] the house that ye build unto me? and where [is] the place of my rest? 2 For all those [things] hath mine hand made, and all those [things] have been, saith the LORD: but to this [man] will I look, [even] to [him that is] poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. … 5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the LORD be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

I believe today that Gods true church is – outside the camp!

  3. Thanks for this. My family and I left a bad church 10 years ago which believed that if you leave their congregation you leave the Body of Christ. It has hauled a lot of christians into bondage, but this is the first time I have ever seen this issue discussed publicly. It helps to know there are other christians out there who can see the lie for what it is.

    • hi anitameg, Glad to meet you, your blog looks good, I look forward to reading it! Was the Church you left the International Church of Christ? I came across them and met with them briefly, back in college. I’d already been a Christian (in Christ) for 5 years but they told me that I had to stop everything I was doing in my life, come under submission to their authority, study their doctrine with them, get baptized by them and join their Church. When I told them my testimony and that I already was in the Body of Christ and had fellowship elsewhere (I was part of a Neo-Evangelical Church at the time) they said that none of that counted, and I had no right to do any Christian ministry if I was not even a Christian. After that last meeting, I ceased contact with them; they kept after me, calling for months.

Sounds cultish? Of course. But what is surprising (or not?) is that when I left the System (Mainstream American Churchianity/ Neo-Evangelicalism et al) many there told me that I was now without hope, now lost, now a rebel, now a heretic etc. Because I left the System. So both the cult and the mainstream cultually accepted Church have the same idea — you are not accepted by God, unless you submit to the system and the Church leaders. But we know that Jesus message was not and is not ever “Submit to the System and the Religious Leaders”. Au contraire.

So what Doug Phillips was saying in his blog quotes, is that it is ok to cheat, ie, Two-Time on Christ, dividing your covenant loyalty with Him and.. with the entity called Church. Just like the idea that some have that it is ok to Two-Time on your spouse, and divide your loyalty with that wife/husband… AND another on the side….. like a “mini” covenant…….erp… oh wait!!

Yes Doug Phillips’ doctrinal chickens have truly come home to roost. “The consequences of ideas”… are very real.

(I say this acknowledging that his victim was an abuse victim ala the ‘Power Differential’ and the ‘Total Institution’. These comments refer to HIS personal ideology which relates to his ironically hypocritical and disgusting behavior.)

  5. Reblogged this on The Grace of God and commented:
Have you had condemnation heaped on you for leaving a church you could no longer be part of with a clean conscience? This post reminds us that the Church is not “The Way”…the Church is a gathering of people who walk in the Way, following Jesus every step. And there are times when we must “go forth to Him, outside the camp, bearing His reproach.” (Heb. 13:13) God bless you!
